WALTON. Situated in the southeast corner of Grand Traverse county,
junction of the Traverse City branch with the main line of the G. R. & I. R.
R., 26 miles southeast of Traverse City, the county seat and the location of the
nearest bank, 73 southwest of Petoskey and 119 northeast of Grand Rapids.
It is the supply point for all the large lumber camps in the vicinity, and is a
busy, flourishing town of 200 inhabitants, containing 3 good hotels, a school,
several stores and a lodge of the society of I. O. G. T. When the
Toledo, Ann Arbor & Traverse Bay and the Frankfort & Houghton Lake
railroads are completed, they will give a fresh stimulus to business in
Walton. Lumber, timber and shingles are the principal shipments. The
price of land varies from $8 to $14 per acre, and the Western Union Telegraph
and the U. S. Express Companies have offices here. Walton is a money order
post office.
