Mr. Burkitt was a senior member of the firm of N. Burkitt & Co., lumber manufacturers, of Kingsley, Grand Traverse County, Michigan,
and a native of Ohio.
He was born in 1819, when at five years of age his parents moved to Indiana where he was brought up on a farm. He was
there about thirty years,
engaged in the saw-mill business, in St. Joseph County, Indiana. The firm
started their present business in the fall of 1883, purchasing the mill
building, and putting in machinery brought from Indiana.
He married in
1849 to Mary Ann Leonard, native of North Carolina, and had four sons and one
daughter. One of the sons, Loren F., junior member of the family firm was
born in St. Joseph County in 1858. Loren's family consisted of a wife and two
children.
